ROMAN CATHOLIC nun and retired historian, Noel Menezes, passed away on Wednesday at age 92.
Honorary Consul of Portugal to Guyana, Michael O. Correia, Jnr., A A, in a statement, said he was saddened to learn of the passing of Sister Menezes.
“Sister Menezes has made such an enormous contribution to our country as a historian, teacher and social worker. Sister Menezes has chronicled the arrival of Guyanese of Portuguese descent from Madeira, perhaps more comprehensively than any other person. I offer my condolences to her friends and colleagues in the Catholic community,” the release said.
Sister Menezes, who was born in 1930, was a nun, Emeritus Professor of History, philanthropist, author, and recipient of the country’s second highest National Award — the Order of Roraima — as well as the Golden Arrow of Achievement. She also received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of the West Indies.
She joined Religious Sisters of Mercy at the age of 17.
