CITY Engineer at Mayor and City Council (M&CC), Colvern Venture, said that he did not foresee any significant challenges in Georgetown, during the May/June rainy season, as all 13 pumps were up and running.

The municipality is also being ‘braced’ by the Ministry of Agriculture.

“Our guys are on high alert on the waterfront to ensure the pumps are put into operation, as we have high water levels in the drainage channel and to ensure those doors are opened, on time, to get off the water as quickly as possible,” Venture told Guyana Chronicle on Monday.

Though very limited in number, engineers attached to the Council would conduct site visits at the pump stations to ensure that no one was slumbering.

“We have limited staff but still, they are going around seeing what areas are clogged and how best they can be cleared as quickly as possible to alleviate any flooding,” Venture informed.

He also shared that the Council was receiving great assistance from the Ministry of Agriculture. When the pumps are down, for instance, the Ministry will assist in getting them rapidly repaired.

It has also been helping City Council to clear some of the main drainage channels leading to the outfall.

“The constraints of the Council’s finances don’t allow us to make a quick response as we would get from the Ministry of Agriculture,” Venture acknowledged.

His department was also working with the Solid Waste Management Department to help clear the waterways of garbage that residents dump.
