A 46-year-old man of Fellowship Street, Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara, who was in custody on an assault/domestic violence charge allegedly committed on a 42-year-old female, was found dead in his cell at the Leonora Police Station on Monday.

Divisional commander, Senior Superintendent Mahendra Siwnarine, confirmed this.

According to Police Headquarters, Knight was expected to be placed before the court to answer the charges today (Tuesday).

Police said the discovery was made around 13:30hrs when a rank made a check at the lock-ups and saw the 46-year-old, who was held in cell number one, hanging motionless. It is suspected that Knight took his own life.
