WESTERN Australia have claimed their first Sheffield Shield title in 23 years, after they drew with Victoria in the season final.

After taking an 80-run lead into the second innings – thanks largely to a first innings century from Cameron Bancroft – WA batted for a lengthy period in their second dig, finishing 7/400d. and leaving no real chance of a result late on day four.

Only requiring a draw in order to lift the Shield, Aaron Hardie (174*) and Sam Whiteman (123) faced over 650 deliveries between them, with the latter earning Player of the Final honours after scoring 85 in the first innings.

The moment was extra special for Shaun Marsh, who was playing his 21st season of Shield cricket for WA and at 38 years of age, may not have many season left in him.

(Final Scores: Western Australia 386 (Bancroft 141, Whiteman 85, Sutherland 5-78) & 7 for 400 dec (Hardie 174*, Whiteman 123) drew with Victoria 306 (Handscomb 80, Perry 74, Pucovski 59, Hardie 3-54, Paris 3-95).
