THE Queen’s Baton was officially received in Guyana last evening, following a cocktail reception at the residence of the British High Commission.

Acting President, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips; British High Commissioner to Guyana Jane Miller along with the president of the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), Kalam Juman-Yassin, joined members of the sporting fraternity in welcoming the Baton to Guyana.

The Queen’s Baton Relay has been a feature since the inaugural Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games.

The Relay began on October 7, 2021, with Her Majesty The Queen placing her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton.

He pointed to the three multipurpose sports facilities in Linden, Essequibo, and Linden.

Meanwhile, according to the GOA, during its time in Guyana, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Linden, Iwokrama River Lodge, River View and Annai and will experience historical locations in Region 10, the Canopy Walkway and the Hinterland.

During its stay in Guyana, the organisers have planned a busy schedule of activities and events with opportunities to showcase untold stories from Baton-bearers, athletes, and young people who are striving for change in their community.

The Queen’s Baton will be carried by representatives of UNICEF and the British High Commission, athletes, schoolchildren and several persons in the indigenous communities.
