ACCUSED: Shurwayne Brandt

SHURWAYNE Brandt, also known as ‘Brave’, was remanded to prison on Thursday for the murder of his son-in-law, Leon Gittens, who was recently gunned down at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, a police source confirmed.

The incident occurred Friday last. It is believed Brandt was dressed in women’s clothing when he allegedly carried out the act.

The accused man appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to charge.

According to reports, Gittens was intimately involved with Brandt’s daughter. It is alleged that Brandt had threatened Gittens’s life, warning him to stay away from his daughter.

Brandt’s daughter, recounting the night of the incident to police, reportedly said she heard three loud explosions that sounded like gunshots.

She also reportedly told law enforcement she witnessed her father fleeing the scene upon investigation. She discovered Gittens motionless on the ground, and called out for help.

Hours later, Brandt was arrested at Eugene Correia International Airport, Ogle, East Coast Demerara while attempting to flee the jurisdiction.

The 45-year-old construction worker will return to court on March 22.
