RANKS from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) came under fire, on Tuesday, by two armed men during the seizure of $17.6 million in cannabis and a motorcar in a narcotics operation at # 69 Village Corentyne, Berbice, Region Six.

According to a release from CANU, two male occupants of motor car PKK 4588 opened fire at the ranks before fleeing from the scene and leaving their vehicle behind.

The cannabis seized amounted to 58.8 kilograms (129.6 pounds.) It is believed to have been intended for transshipment to Suriname and had a street value of $17,640,000.00.

CANU said that the drug operations are a part of its efforts to curb the flow of narcotics in the said district.

“CANU reminds persons that trafficking in narcotics is illegal and persons caught will be prosecuted according to the law and assets confiscated,” the agency said.
