–83 fatal accidents recorded this year
THE Traffic Headquarters of the Guyana Police Force has recorded a 32 per cent decrease in fatal accidents.
According to statistics, as of Friday, December 17, 2021, there were 83 fatal accidents this year when compared to 122 for the same period in 2020.
Traffic Chief, Senior Superintendent Ramesh Ashram, is encouraging motorists to adhere to the Road Safety Theme during the festive season: ‘Arrive Alive – Stop Speeding! Don’t Drink and Drive’. If persons are imbibing they must have a designated driver.
He is also advising citizens that there will be continuous traffic enforcement Exercises throughout the Christmas Season. Pedestrians are advised to be more attentive and practise the curb drill, while motorcyclists are encouraged to comply with all safety rules, since they have been the major categories of road users who have lost their lives on the roadways for the year 2021.
As part of the department’s strategy to reduce road fatalities, the Traffic Chief noted that ranks will be placed at strategic points on the East Bank and East Coast road corridors, and around the city of Georgetown, to ensure a free flow of traffic during the festive season.
Last year, he added that the main causes of road fatalities were speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol and being inattentive while driving.
