MOTORCYCLISTS and pedestrians have accounted for the majority of road deaths this year, according to the Guyana Police Force Traffic Headquarters which has recorded a 32 per cent decrease in fatal accidents.
As a result of these statistics, the police, on Thursday, conducted a two-hour motor and pedal cycle campaign around Georgetown, which led to the arrest of several road users who were in breach of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Regulations Chapter 51:02.
As of July 10, 2021, there has been a 32 per cent decrease in fatal accidents bringing the number down from 71, to 48 cases for the same period last year. Additionally, there has been a 30 per cent decrease in fatalities with the numbers down from 74 to 52 cases for the same period.
A total of 29 pedestrians and motorcyclists have died due to inattentiveness and speeding in 18 out of the 21 fatal accidents.
