Five arrested after missing fisherman found dead

POLICE in Berbice have arrested five persons in connection with the death of 34-year-old Shaheed Mohamed, whose lifeless body was found floating in the Aruka River, Kumaka Water Front, North West District, on Thursday.
The discovery was made two days after he was reported missing.
Mohamed, a fisherman of Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice, was fished out of the river around 08:00 hours.
Police retrieved the body, and it was positively identified by boat captain Edwin Oneil and other crew members. An hour later, Mohamed was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.
According to the police, Mohamed’s body was examined and what appears to be marks of violence were seen on the right side of his neck and right eye. The body is presently at the Mabaruma Public Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Mohamed was reported missing on August 10, by his boat captain. It was reported by Oneil that Mohamed was last seen in the company of two female Venezuelans, two nights before the missing report was made.
Police investigations had led to the two females being detained along with three of Mohamed’s crew members. Investigations are ongoing.
