THE Regional Democratic Council of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), on Wednesday, approved a $3.6M project for the Wakapoa Village Council to construct a walkway bridge at Curemeru Wakapoa, Lower Pomeroon.
At a simple handing-over ceremony of the project to the council, Regional Executive Officer, Devanand Ramdatt, said that the establishment of the bridge will result in a significant boost to the transportation service in the village.

It will ease the burden of pregnant mothers and children who are forced to walk approximately four miles to access basic services. The bridge will measure 68 feet in length and 12 feet in width.
Ramdatt assured that the RDC will monitor the construction works. The bill of quantities and the specification of the project will also be circulated to the residents.
“We are doing this because we hope that the community will take ownership and it creates economic and improves social benefit, I hope residents will benefit,” Ramdatt said.

The REO called on the Toshao, Lloyd Perriera, to ensure that residents benefit from the project through employment. Meanwhile, the Toshao said the Curemeru area was a large wetland and he was happy that the RDC realised the importance of a bridge.

“So now we will be able to have such a contract, this project will make lives easier for the mothers especially those who have to visit the health post; I will ensure that the project is successful from the council level,” Perriera said.
He noted that over 1,000 residents will have access to the project.
