GUYANA’S female hockey team received a timely boost from GTT to help in the quest for gold at the 2021 Women’s Indoor Pan American Cup.
Orson Ferguson, GTT’s Chief Marketing Officer, handed over $2M to the team that will travel to Feasterville, Pennsylvania, USA for the June 25–27 tournament.
Ferguson, while handing over the cheque to the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB), said the company is delighted to provide support to the local women’s hockey team as they prepare to represent Guyana on the international stage. “Over the years, GTT has endorsed the National Indoor Hockey Championships through various initiatives that showcase the local talent in Guyana. We are elated to see the senior women’s hockey team qualify for such a global event and we look forward to the team’s success as they represent our country and our brand internationally,” Ferguson said. The CMO further applauded the team and the GHB for rising above the COVID-19 challenges in preparing for the grand event.
President of the Guyana Hockey Board, Philip Fernandes, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the telecommunications giant for its continued partnership.

According to Fernandes, “GTT has been one of the local organisations which have been supportive of our efforts in the past, and GTT is responsible for some of our success in development of the sport. One of our goals this year is to participate in IPAC and GTT has made this a realisation and for that we are grateful,” Fernandes said.
He added, “Our ultimate goal is to participate in the Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) in October, 2021. The CAC qualifier is our best path to the Olympic Games and the IPAC is the most effective way to develop our teams and best possible opportunity to qualify for this world level event.”
Fernandes noted that while the team was tasked with completing daily exercise routines to keep fit and remain in regular contact for remote meetings to discuss tactical aspects of the game and other purposes in 2020; it has resumed training with limitations that follow the recommended COVID-19 guidelines to further prepare for the event.
Guyana will face defending champions USA, Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, Uruguay and Argentina.
The Guyana Hockey Board hosted the last Women’s Indoor Pan American Cup in 2017 at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, where the local ladies finished sixth place.
