A 45-year-old male of Dowding Street, Kitty, Georgetown, Peter Headley, was shot by ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) after drawing “what appeared to be a firearm” on Saturday evening.
According to a police report, about 20:45hrs on Saturday, acting upon information and following up on investigations pertaining to an armed robbery committed at Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on May 11, 2021, ranks of the GPF intercepted a motor vehicle with two men inside at Nandy Park, EBD.
During a search of the vehicle a television set suspected to have been stolen during the armed robbery was found, the report stated and as a result, Headley, the driver of the vehicle, 45 years, and the other occupant were arrested.
Headley was placed in the front passenger seat of the civilian vehicle, which was being driven by a police rank, while an armed police rank was in the back seat. The other suspect was placed in the police vehicle with the other ranks.
Police Headquarters reported that on their way to the Providence Police Station, EBD, Headley reached under the seat of the vehicle and pulled out what appeared to be a firearm, causing the armed rank to discharge a round which struck him to his body. There was no report as to whether the suspected firearm was retrieved.
Headley was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment. Police Headquarters noted that the Police Office of Professional Responsibility is conducting an investigation into the incident.
