THE Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce and HIAS Guyana, on Tuesday, welcomed the launch of The Academy of Women Entrepreneurs, via a virtual meeting. The academy, which is the result of a partnership between WeLead Caribbean and the U.S. Embassy in Georgetown, aims to help women in Guyana launch businesses that will contribute to the development of the economy, build better communities, and help the participants change their lives.
It will see 25 women, including Venezuelan migrants who are living in rural areas of Guyana, such as Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), being assisted in this regard.
Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, who was present at the launch, lauded the initiative, stating that it supported the economic empowerment of women, which is a cause that she passionately supports.
Citing the United Nations (UN) Women’s definition for women’s economic empowerment, Walrond underscored the importance of economic equality, especially as it pertains to access to, ownership of, and control over production resource and meaningful participation in economic decision-making, among others.

U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, Sarah-Ann Lynch

“The COVID-19 pandemic, and the related economic downturn, have impacted women more severely than men, particularly reopening gaps that had already been closed. Given the significant barriers that we as women face in the world of business, and indeed as we do in many spheres of life, the efforts of WeLead in launching the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs is timely and welcome,” she stated.
“Much work is needed to create enabling factors that lead to sustainable change for women, and the Government of Guyana is committed to ensuring that women are fully involved in the development of policies that affect their lives and livelihood,” the minister added.
Meanwhile, Sarah-Ann Lynch, the U.S. Ambassador to Guyana, also commended the programme, and noted that it was only “part of the story” when it came to the US’ support for women. She encouraged participants to take full advantage of the opportunity.
She also lauded Guyana for reaching out and assisting young women and children, and expressed hope that similar initiatives would be undertaken across other regions of Guyana.
