ST KITTS and Nevis, Suriname, The Dominican Republic and Guatemala opened their World Cup qualifying campaigns with victories on Wednesday night.
In Group B play at the Dr Ir Franklin Essed Stadion, Suriname enjoyed the largest margin of victory with a 3-0 win over the Cayman Islands courtesy of goals from Shaquille Pinas, Ryan Donk and Gleofilo Vlijiter. Meanwhile, Vinceroy Nelson’s 42nd-minute strike gave St Kitts Nevis a 1-0 win over Puerto Rico at the San Cristóbal Panamerican Stadium in Group F action. In Group D, Fran Nunez scored in the 52nd minute to give The Dominican Republic a 1-0 win over Dominica at the Estadio Felix Sanchez. Luis Martinez scored in the 60th minute in Guatemala’s 1-0 victory over 10-man Cuba in Group C. Karel Espino was sent off in the 61st minute in the match played at the Estadio Mateo Flores. In Group A, Antigua and Barbuda came from behind twice to hold Montserrat to a 2-2 draw at the Ergilio Hato Stadium.
Lyle Taylor scored from the penalty spot after only seven minutes to give Montserrat the early lead. Eugene Kirwan pulled Antigua level in the 23rd minute only to see Taylor score his second three minutes later to put Montserrat ahead for a second time, 2-1.
However, D’Andre Bishop scored in the 45th minute to secure a share of the points. (Sportsmax)
