CURT ‘Ceejay’ Johnson fell in love with music at a very young age largely due to the influence that family activities had on him. Added to this, the music group that he was part of during his days at Tutorial High School only served to add fuel to his love for music.
Today, ‘Ceejay,’ an abbreviation of his name in words, is an artiste and producer in New York, having founded the Roll Out Records label that is better known as ROR. Born and raised in Georgetown, he said he was like any typical boy who had dreams to make it big in life.
Speaking in an interview with the Buzz this week, Ceejay explained how he has continued his journey in the music industry ever since migrating to the United States of America as a teenager in 2002.

His label, ROR, was created with the intention of giving musicians a chance to showcase their talents, while at the same time, being able to monetize them. The entity deals with every aspect of the music industry including shooting videos, artist developments, recordings, and so forth.
“I fell in love with music at a very young age. My family had a sound system called lick shot and the DJ at that time was Major Joe B. So whenever he played at the home, he would always give me the mic to sing,” Ceejay reflected, adding, “Later on in high school, I was a part of a music group that did a lot of clashing.”
After migrating, he focused on school but music was always part of his daily activities. In 2013, he got a chance to record his first song titled ‘Nah Bad Mind’ and the great feedback motivated him to continue and record another song called, ‘Same Thing.’
“Same Thing is a song which examines the similarities of America and Guyana in terms of social adversities persons would face on a daily basis while living in Guyana or in the land of many opportunities, the USA,” he explained.

Like many immigrants, Ceejay had many plans to live the perceived ‘American Dream’ but once he got there, reality kicked in. “A reality whereby hard work was the order of everyday including birthdays and holidays; a single second is valuable; family is not as connected as they are in Guyana and many other unfortunate realities, which have helped to shaped my story.”
Ceejay said writing his own music is important to him. “I remember the great Bob Marley talking in an interview about the feelings you get when you make music and I’ve experience that feeling from writing, so I do write my own songs and I also write for other artistes as well.”
He enjoys writing reggae and dancehall and also helps out other Hip Hop artistes with their lyrics while recording them.

“My greatest accomplishment so far is being able to connect with fans from all over the world when it comes to them relating to my music. But I’m a smaller scale; I’ve been rated # 4 and # 9 on the worldwide DJ’s Favorite’s sponsored by Johnny Wonder (Jamaica) for 2 songs, one being ‘Roll Out Party’ and the other titled ‘Celebrating.’”
One of Ceejay’s main goals is to come home and extend his record label by building a studio in Georgetown. His intention is to be able to give back and also help discover younger artists “so that Guyana’s music can have a quality that’s accepted and loved internationally.”
He has worked with several international producers like Not Nice Records, Jay Crazie Records, Dunwell Records and Drizzy Records.
