THE Region Three COVID-19 Task Force recently visited La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara and reminded residents that prolonged close contact is the source for most COVID-19 infections.
As such, the task force reiterated that physical distancing combined with emphasis on hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette and frequent sanitisation of the environment will be the most effective mitigation approaches until the population is vaccinated.
This was disclosed by Region Three Coordinator for the COVID-19 Task Force, Halim Khan, during an interview with the Guyana Chronicle.
“Parfaite Harmonie is a hot spot for COVID-19 cases and we want to educate the population on the correct ways in which they should operate and safeguard themselves and others,” he said, adding that “Outbreaks have been attributed to large family gatherings, religious services, funerals, and entertainment activities.”

During the outreach in the community, masks and fliers on educational topics on COVID-19 were shared, along with requisite advise to those who inquired about their wellbeing and safeguarding their families against the pandemic.
“When we visited the community recently, we saw a lot of people wearing their masks to protect their chin and not their nose and respiratory system,” Khan noted.
The Regional COVID-19 Coordinator explained that the degree of importance of these measures is considered to be from top down, with physical distancing being the most important, followed by personal protective equipment (PPE) and non-medical masks (NMMs) in terms of preventing transmission of COVID-19.
Khan encouraged the residents to practise physical distancing since it is the most effective way to reduce the risk of transmitting COVID-19 in community settings.
