THE Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), in close collaboration with the Mon Repos/La Reconnaissance Neighbourhood Democratic Council, has identified a site for the drilling of a new well in the community of Lusignan, on the East Coast of Demerara, by the end of May, 2021.

Villages such as Enmore, Mon Repos, Lusignan, Annandale, Good Hope, Friendship, Enterprise, and other nearby villages have been experiencing a low level and in some cases, a disruption of service, due to the collapse of the Lusignan well.

GWI, in a release, said numerous failed attempts were made to repair the well, after which it was decided that a new well will be drilled. The procurement of materials for the drilling of the well is in progress and this includes well screens, well casings, drilling fluid and conductor casings.

GWI had implemented alternative arrangements to provide a steady level of service to areas that have been affected by the collapsed well. This includes reactivating the Enmore well station, and channeling water from the Friendship Water Treatment plant to the affected areas. The residents have been receiving a total of 10 hours of water daily.

GWI’s Chief Executive Officer, Shaik Baksh, on Wednesday, met with the Chairman of the NDC, Ayube Mohammed and Councillors, as well as representative of surrounding areas to discuss measures to improve the level of service in the interim.

It was found that areas such as Annandale North, Lusignan South of the Grassfield, Sand Reef and Marshon, have been receiving a fair level of water pressure.

However, there are other areas which are receiving a poor level of service. In this regard, GWI will commence a massive leak-repair programme on Friday to aid in the improvement of the water pressure.

GWI engineers are also closely examining the transmission and distribution system to optimise the flow of water to the areas.

A visit was also made to the Friendship Water Treatment Plant to examine how the flow can be increased to better service the areas.
