NEW head of the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA), Seon Erskine, promises to continue working to develop and promote the sport. The long-time official was selected to serve as president of the body last week when the GAWA held its biennial electoral Annual General Meeting (AGM). At the virtual meeting, Erskine replaced Frank Tucker as head. Erskine, who served as General Secretary before, thanked the members for their confidence in him to serve in the highest position for the next two years. Meanwhile, Tyson English, from the Fusion Gym, was voted in as the new General Secretary, while Sabrina Pestano was elected as first vice-president and Bertram Austin as second vice- president. Sean Cozier is tasked with doing the Treasurer’s duty, with Colin McKoy functioning as Assistant Secretary/Treasurer. Additionally, Keshana Giddings is the Organising Secretary while Kurt Braithwaite is the Publicity Secretary.
Members representing five gyms participated in the elections. According to information from the association, “necessary reports were presented to the members who adopted them; a programme of activities was also presented to the members for their approval.” The association, which is being cautious due to the COVID-19 pandemic, might still participate in the International Weightlifting Federation’s Electoral Congress, the Pan-American Weightlifting Championships and the Phillips and Springer Caribbean Championships.
