Reg.4 continues to see spike in COVID cases

OF 79 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in Guyana on Saturday, Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) accounted for 40, reflecting a significant spike in transmission of the virus within the region.

On Monday last, Region Four accounted for 2,944 of the COVID-19 cases in Guyana, but on Saturday 3,124 cases were recorded, showing an increase of 180 new cases in just six days.

Of the 79 additional cases, 47 were males with the remaining 32 being females. Region One recorded six new cases, while Regions Two and Seven recorded three new cases each. Region Three recorded an additional nine new cases; Region Five recorded five new cases; Region Six recorded four new cases; Region Eight saw an increase of two cases, while Region 10 recorded seven new cases.
The 79 new cases were recorded from a total of 482 tests, taking the overall known cases to 7,222 since the first COVID-19 case was reported in March 2020; the number of recoveries is at 6,361.

There are 33 persons in institutional isolation; 651 are in home isolation and 21 are in institutional quarantine. Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, they are not exhibiting symptoms.
