THE Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) has announced a restart to the sport tentatively set for next Sunday with time trials.
The federation opted to re-start with the event, after consultation with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the Ministry of Health.
Racing Secretary of the GCF, Malcolm Sonaram, noted that permission was only granted on Thursday.
“After applying for permission to run off a race which we were sure to comply with the COVID-19 guidelines, we were eagerly anticipating a response. Alas, our response came on Thursday November 12, 2020. We had a spontaneous meeting yesterday and as a result we have decided to make this Time Trial Series a success.”
Time trials limit interactions since cyclists ride alone while officials record their times. After all participants complete the set distance the cyclist with the fastest time would be declared the winner.
The federation said that the event would bring a new form of excitement for the cyclists and deemed it a “Race against the Clock.”
“We at Guyana Cycling Federation are cognizant of the COVID-19 guidelines and are sure that we can adhere to the rules and still be able to successfully pull off this event,” information from the GCF Facebook page pointed out.
Next Sunday’s opener is billed for Georgetown and Sonaram indicated that although the location and distance have not been finalised, it would be under 20 km.
The other meets in the series are scheduled for November 29 in Berbice and December 6 in Linden.
According to information from the federation, in each time trial the top three participants will be rewarded, while based on the overall accumulated time placements, the top six will be rewarded after the three events.
The time trials will be opened to both junior and senior cyclists.
