A man, who was allegedly caught with a quantity of cannabis in a lunch bag, on Friday, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was granted $50,000 bail by Magistrate Leron Daly.
Mandela Hazel, of ‘A’ Field Sophia, pleaded not guilty to possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on Tuesday, November 10, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he had 83 grammes of cannabis in his possession.
According to the facts, about 01:30hours on the day in question, a group of policemen were on mobile patrol and, while on Mandela Avenue, they observed Hazel behaving suspiciously.
As they approached him to conduct a search on his person, Hazel abruptly walked into a yard and reached for a yellow lunch pack which he attempted to throw over a nearby fence. However, It did not go over the fence.
The lunch bag was retrieved by a policeman who searched it and discovered 83 transparent ziploc bags containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. Additionally, a grainy-like substance, suspected to be Methamphetamine, was also discovered.
Hazel was told of the offence committed, cautioned and arrested. He was taken to the Ruimveldt Police Station where the suspected cannabis and ‘meth’ were weighed. The ‘meth’ amounted to 7 grammes. However, investigations are still ongoing in relation to this substance.
The matter was adjourned to December 11.
