ANSA McAL Trading Limited (AMTL), on Wednesday, donated 100 vials of Remdesivir to the Ministry of Health, to aid in the continuous fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
At a simple presentation held at the Ministry of Health, Brickdam, Georgetown, AMTL Managing Director, Troy Cadogan, said, “ANSA McAL Trading Limited has long been cognisant of its Corporate Social Responsibility and has donated trinchloro bleach through the Rotary Club of Guyana since March. However, as one of the leading distributors in Guyana, ANSA McAL Trading Limited has partnered with one of its suppliers to donate 100 units of Remdesivir 100mg Injection.
“The donation of this drug will provide a powerful tool in the Government’s arsenal to help in its fight against some of the debilitating symptoms of COVID-19 that can occur in some cases,” Cadogan said.

Health Minister, Dr. Frank Anthony, accepted the donation on behalf of his ministry and while expressing gratitude to ANSA McAL, he highlighted that it is such efforts by corporate Guyana that will aid in the fight against COVID-19. The minister also said that the Remdesivir Injection is a “powerful component” in the fight against the virus but also urged ANSA McAL Trading Limited to continue to spread the word on COVID-19 protocols that include the wearing of masks, social distancing and hand sanitising.”
The minister further noted that Remdesivir is expensive and becomes a greater challenge when one patient requires the use of 10 vials over the course of treatment.
“We all have to work together to ensure that we have control of COVID-19. I’m happy that we’re getting some more Remdesivir available if somebody really gets sick. We are also extending to regional hospitals,” the minister said.

ANSA McAL Trading Limited referenced their commitment to donating another 100 vials of the injection by this coming weekend with the total cost of the 200 vials amounting to just over $7M.

It was also noted that ANSA McAL Trading Limited is prepared to fulfill its social corporate responsibility through works with all government and non-governmental organisations, to ensure that the people of Guyana receive quality pharmaceuticals from reputable manufacturers as it relates to the supply of pharmaceutical products.

Remdesivir (GS-5734), a nucleoside analogue prodrug, has inhibitory effects on pathogenic animal and human coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro, and inhibits Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS-CoV-2 replication in animal models. Early clinical studies have shown clinically meaningful differences and reductions in some clinical parameters in patients.
