– Shape Customz Creations launches virtual clothing line

There was no riveted audience or fantastic décor, but there was fashion and the pieces sizzled.
Donna Ramsammy James set the virtual trend at the launched of her Shape Customz Creation 2021 Clothing line “Behind the Mask” on Sunday last at her home in Century Palm Gardens, Georgetown.

It was definitely a first for Guyana, and quite possibly the Caribbean and further afield.

“As far as I know, it’s the first virtual collection this side of the world. Nothing like this was done in the Caribbean or the Americas”.
The seasoned fashion designer, whose intricate work transcends tailoring, said that the sombre mood created by the pandemic did not dent her spirit. She did however tone down her colours this year—but that did very little to the overall look.
The clothing line has a rich fusion of cultures and expressions—and borrows from Donna’s time spent in India, Africa and the Caribbean.

IMPROVISING
At the launch, Donna was forced to navigate around the intricacies of the restrictions. She worked with a small team and opted to keep the show simple, yet elegant.
“This show was particularly challenging. Normally the team comprises of a display unit (models) of 16. We do choreography and we normally rehearse for months prior, but this year we had to tone it down.”

To follow protocols, only nine models were used, practice sessions were reduced to weeks and only on the day of the show did they all assemble. The event was streamed live on social media and via the website. Unlike previous years where 120 pieces were created, this time the team only made 54.
All of the clothing on display came with masks—it’s trending and necessary.

The 2021 Shape Customz Creation clothing line still has its signature blend which can be described as sexy yet classy and ethnically-fused but chic.
