A 56-year-old motorcyclist, from Devonshire Castle, Region Two, is currently battling for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Suddie Public Hospital, after he was involved in a horrific accident with a hearse attached to the Regional Democratic Council on the Devonshire Castle Public Road on Monday.
This newspaper understands that Toolsie Maniram is in an unconscious condition at the hospital with severe head injuries. Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that Maniram was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road on motorcycle CJ 6341 at a normal rate of speed, while the driver of the hearse GNN 5061 was proceeding in the said direction some distance behind, at a fast rate of speed.
It is alleged that, while in the process of negotiating a right bend, 59-year-old Bharat Joseph, the driver of the hearse, lost control and collided with the rear of the motorcycle. That occurred at around 17:10h.
As a result of the collision, the motorcyclist fell onto the roadway and was dragged a reasonable distance. The hearse then toppled and came to a halt in a trench located on the eastern side of the road, pinning the motorcyclist.
Maniram was removed from under the hearse by passersby who took him to the hospital. The driver of the hearse remains in police custody.
