Contrite killer gets off on manslaughter plea

SEVEN years after 31-year-old Adrian Richmond, called “Pinkey”, was fatally stabbed with an ice pick during a dog-fighting event at Industry, East Coast Demerara, his killer finally confessed to the crime at the High Court on Thursday.

Terrence Hodge, called “Mice Man”, was arraigned before Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court for the capital offence of murder, but opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

He confessed that that on May 23, 2013, in the county of Demerara, he murdered Richmond. He was represented by Attorney-at-Law Dexter Todd, while the State’s case was presented by Prosecutor Tyra Bakker.

According to facts presented by prosecutor Bakker, the two men were at a dog-fighting event at Industry, following which they got into an argument, which quickly became physical.
During the altercation, Hodge reportedly dealt Richmond several stabs about the body with an ice pick, before making good his escape. The victim was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he succumbed.

While addressing the court, Hodge said: “I’m terribly sorry for the incident; if I could undo my mistake, I would do things differently.”
In the end, the judge sentenced Hodge to time served, after considering his guilty plea and the time he had spent on remand.
