Four persons are feared dead following a boat collision along the  Berbice River in the vicinity of “Kabatali” earlier this evening.

While information is sketchy, the Guyana Chronicle understands that a wooden vessel, which was powered by a 75 horse power motor engine, was returning to the New Amsterdam township, when it collided with a smaller vessel, in which four family members, who reside at the village of Sand Hill, were travelling.

As a result of the impact, the four family members, known only as “Godfrey”,  “Julian”, “Freeman” , and “Lindie”, fell into the Berbice River. Their boat was completely destroyed and reports are that a father and his son are among those missing. The accident occurred around 20:30 hours, beyond a nationwide curfew currently in effect.

Relatives immediately began search efforts, however, their worst fears may have been confirmed since they were only able to recover slippers belonging to the missing men.

Meanwhile, the occupants of the larger boat which was powered by the 75 horsepower engine, did not stop to render assistance.Residents of the riverine community claimed that the vessel originated from East Canje.

Police Divisional Commander Calvin Brutus acknowledged, confirmed that, the incident is currently being investigated by ranks in Region 10 ( Upper Demerara/ Upper Berbice).Reports are that the Guyana Defence Force Coastguard are also investigating the incident.
