…as town council enforces COVID-19 measures
AS the authorities at Lethem work to curtail the spread of the coronavirus, the town council will be undertaking weekly sanitisation of the market at the Rupununi town.
Recently, the Guyana Chronicle reported on several measures which a regional stakeholder body recommended to the authorities and these are currently being enforced by the town council.
According to a release from the town council, all persons who wish to enter several public buildings, including the market, must wash their hands at the entrance of the buildings.
Among other measures enforced on April 2, 2020, are for all religious organisations, social organisations, commercial businesses and offices to desist from all forms of gathering and to maintain the social distancing conditions outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).
All businesses are asked to be closed at 18:00 hours daily and the council says no road vending will be allowed at this time; failure to adhere will result in permits being revoked. It was noted too that all restaurants are asked to offer takeaway service instead of eat in. Also, no permission will be granted for dances and parties or similar events which will see mass gatherings.
The council said too that all recreational facilities, including play-parks, will be closed until further notice.
While the town has not enforced a curfew, the council urged residents to desist from being on the streets after 19:00hrs unless absolutely necessary.
The Regional Task Force Committee of Region Nine, of which the Town Council is a member, has requested the closure of the Kurupukari crossing. Several days ago, as part of the recommendations, only cargo trucks, government vehicles , security forces vehicles and private vehicles with no more than two persons are allowed to use the pontoon at the crossing. It was noted that the private bus services which ply the Lethem/Georgetown route were informed of the move.
During this period when it is imperative that citizens take every precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the council asked the general public to assist in safeguarding themselves and loved ones by adhering to the instructions of the authorities.
Persons exhibiting symptoms and signs of the coronavirus are asked to contact via telephone the Lethem Regional Hospital’s hotline # 772-2006.
