… Glasgow, McArthur rally Guyana to 2-0 win against USVI
GUYANA defeated US Virgin Islands 2-0 on Friday at the CONCACAF U-20 Championship Qualifiers in Nicaragua, thanks to goals from Nicolas McArthur and Omari Glasgow, but, coach Wayne Dover’s men will have to beat the host nation when they meet tonight, if they want to feature in the June 20-July 5 U-20 Championship in Honduras.
Playing in their third match in the five-team group, Guyana, after finishing the first half goal-less, first got on the sheet with Glasgow scoring in the 54th minute, while McArthur made it 2-0 three minutes later (57th minute).
However, despite getting the win, Dover would have been more comfortable if they had picked up the three points and were able to close-in on Nicaragua, as it relates to the goal tally.
Nicaragua, who opened the tournament with an 8-0 thrashing over US Virgin Islands, blanked Montserrat 4-0 in their second game and edged St Vincent and the Grenadines 2-0 in the other.
Guyana’s result against USVI on Friday meant that they are three goals behind Group A’s host nation.
With only one team advancing to the CONCACAF U-20 Championship, Guyana will need to win today in their match, which is expected to kick off at 19:30hrs at the Nicaragua National Football Stadium in the country’s capital of Managua. (Rawle Toney)
