MEMBERS of the Disciplined Services stationed within the New Amsterdam/ Canje and Lower Corentyne districts, converged, just after dawn, at Central Police Station where 340 of them were expected to cast their ballots, ahead of the National and Regional elections.

Regionally, an additional 446 police, prison and Guyana Defence Force ranks were expected to cast their ballots at New Amsterdam Prison Hall and Whim and Springlands Police Stations, respectively.

Apart from a few ranks who indicated that their names were not on the official list, the majority of voters told reporters that the process was without hiccups.

Berbice Police Divisional Commander, Calvin Brutus, was among the first group of persons to cast their ballots at the Central Station training room.

In brief remarks, Commander Brutus said those ranks whose names were not seen on the list at Central Station were  listed  on other lists posted at Whim and Springlands Stations.

“As a result, ranks will be afforded the opportunity to cast their ballots. It is not that they are not listed, they are on the list but find themselves at different areas. They will be transported to the different areas to cast their ballots, then to proceed to do regular duties.”

In an invited comment on the readiness of the local police for Election Day, Brutus assured that his ranks were quite prepared, having been exposed to much training. He added that security arrangements were in place to ensure safety at the New Amsterdam Prisons, riverain areas and the coastline.
