Three children were hospitalised on Friday after a doctor lost control of his speeding SUV and slammed into the trio on the Bush Lot Public Road on the East Berbice Corentyne.

Those injured are nine-year old Roshnie Mohan of Bush Lot Village and sisters Aliyah and Aneela Mohabir, ages sixteen and fourteen respectively, of Number 46 Village.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver, a doctor attached to the Skeldon Hospital, was heading east along the northern carriageway reportedly at a fast rate when he struck down Mohan who was crossing the roadway.He reportedly pulled to the left and
then struck down the two sisters who were walking on the road shoulders at the time.

The impact sent the two girls flying into the air;one landed on the bonnet of the car while the other was struck down by a cyclist who was passing at the time.

“I was riding when me see the man knock down the lil girl then he dash in the corner and knock down two more and one ah dem pitch and lash me off me bike,” Ramkarran Latchman recalled.

Latchman, a carpenter by trade, suffered minor bruises and cuts about his body while the three injured girls were picked up by public spirited citizens and rushed to the Port
Mourant Hospital.

Aliyah was in an unconscious state and blood was seen oozing from her head and mouth while she nursed a cut to her face.The sisters were transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where up to press time Aliyah were being prepared to be transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) as her condition is listed as critical.She was still unresponsive.

Her younger sister’s condition was listed as serious.She suffered a broken leg but was responsive to treatment.Mohan’s condition was said to be stable.

At the scene angry residents from the neighbouring villages were making threats to burn the vehicle and beat the driver but the police arrived and promptly and got the situation under control. There were three passengers who remained in the vehicle while the driver exited to render assistance but was in a state of shock and just remained with a blank stare.

Up to press time the doctor remained in police custody assisting with investigations.
