My 12 Favourite Photographs of 2019

THIS is the third consecutive year in which I am publishing my 12 Favourite Photographs of the previous year. This is a rather subjective exercise. However, I always hope for and do receive, many favourable comments. So, here goes:

This photograph of The British High Commissioner to Guyana, His Excellency Greg Quinn, and two Guyanese was taken by Francis Quamina Farrier at the Guyana Legion on Remembrance Day Sunday, November 10, 2019. Please observe the thumbs-up by the lady for the high commissioner. The above caption to this photograph was written on November 14, 2019. A month later the High Commissioner was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Queen’s University in Ireland. So I am wondering whether my mention of “the thumbs-up” in the caption above establishes that I am “A SEE-FAR MAN,” without knowing it (Photo by Francis Q. Farrier, November 10, 2019)

I took this photograph from the deck of the Leguan to Parika T&HD ferry. In the foreground is a portion of the Essequibo River. This is one of the hundreds of beaches here in Guyana. This one is at the estuary of the Essequibo River at Parika, Region Three. Note how clean this beach is being kept (Photo by Francis Q. Farrier)

When I asked this young Sister and Brother from Pakuri (formally St. Cuthbert’s Mission) on the Upper Mahaica river, Region Four, to pose for me, this was how they looked at each other as I clicked away. World War II Veteran Benjamin Durant, familiarly called Uncle Benjie, smiles as he hears President David Granger shower praise on those who served the nation in a military capacity. It was at a ceremony at the Legionnaires on Remembrance Day, November 10, 2019. While many Guyanese show respect for our elders, sadly, there are those who display a lack of respect for elders in Guyana, referring to them as “dinosaurs”, and saying that “they must go one side” as a very powerful and influential political individual stated in the presence of many youngsters. This young lady was one of the students who attended the oil & gas presentation by Dr. Mark Bynoe at Linden on February 1, 2019. I have looked at this bright young face many times, and thought of the highly intelligent interaction she had with Dr. Bynoe. David “G” Buses Numbers 20 and 21 parked in front of the Ministry of Education on Brickdam in Georgetown, Guyana, attracted my attention. President David Arthur Granger, a father and grandfather, recognised the need for students who are sometimes packed 24 in minibuses registered to carry 14, needed his “fatherly” assistance. Let’s hope that more social workers and pastors in Guyana lift up father figures such as President Granger in their Father’s Day messages in 2020. STOP the male-bashing on Father’s Day and STOP packing students like sardines in minibuses (Photo by “FQF” as the President usually addresses me)
