A taxi driver, who struck down a motorist in front of the Linden Hospital Complex on Tuesday night, attempted to flee the scene but was arrested by the police.
Reports are that the Victim, 20-year-old Jamal Rampersaud of Linden, was on his way home when the motorcar, bearing the registration number HC 8351, made a U- turn in front of the hospital and struck him (Rampersaud). The driver attempted to escape in another motor vehicle but was apprehended by the police.
Rampersaud was taken to the Linden Hospital Complex and was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) on Wednesday.
While Rampersaud’s injuries seemed on the surface to be minor, concerns were raised by his family members that the driver may face very little or no consequence for the accident.
Within the past week there have been several road accidents which led to a number of fatalities.
On Saturday, December 01, four persons, including a 12-year-old child died after a minibus collided with a motor car on the public road at Nismes, West Bank Demerara.
Reports are that the driver of the Minibus involved in the accident fled the scene and was still to be identified.
Divisional Commander, Simon McBean, said, in a previous interview with the Guyana Chronicle that the allegations which stated that the driver of the minibus was being disputed were being investigated. Hensley Alleyne, who is among sixteen persons who were hospitalised following the accident, was initially identified as the driver of minibus, BYY 2981, which crashed into the car, PTT 691 which resulted in the deadly accident that claimed the lives of four persons.
Alleyne has been identified as the owner of the minibus. According to a police source, though Alleyne was in the bus, he was performing the duties of conductor when the accident occurred, while the minibus is said to have been driven by another man. A source disclosed that the real driver fled the scene following the accident.
