Man sentenced and fined for possession of illegal gun and ammunition

MAGISTRATE Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, on Monday November 4, 2019, sentenced a man to two years’ imprisonment and fined him $50,000 on gun and ammunition charges.
Kevin Bruce called ‘Banky’ made his appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was sentenced for the two offences he pleaded guilty to, with explanation.

Particulars of the first charge stated that, on September 26, 2019, at East La Penitence Police Station, he had, in his possession, 10 live rounds of .32 ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.

The second charge stated that, on the same day and at the same place he had a .32 Taurus Pistol when he was not the holder of a firearm licence.

Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus sentenced Bruce to two years in prison on each charge and ordered that the sentences run concurrently, and fined him $50,000.

According to information, on the day in question, around 00:10 hours, Constable Benjamin and other ranks from the East La Penitence Police Station, having received a complaint about an unknown male being in a yard where he doesn’t live, went to the yard and saw Bruce exiting from the southern side, in the dark, with a bag on his back. When Bruce saw the police, he began to run and the police gave chase, caught and arrested him.

It was also reported that Constable Benjamin told Bruce he wanted to conduct a search and Bruce refused and pushed him. The police then put Bruce into the vehicle and drove to the East La Penitence Police Station. As they exited the vehicle, the police observed Bruce placing his hand in the area of his crotch. Bruce pulled out a gun and pointed it in the direction of the police. The police ordered Bruce to drop the gun but he refused. The police became fearful and a firearm was discharged in Bruce’s direction. Bruce dropped the gun which was picked up by the police and Bruce was charged.
