Venezuelan remanded for illegal ‘ammo’

A 49-year-old Venezuelan man was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for possession of illegal ammunition.

Jorge Guerreiro appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It is alleged that on October 16, 2019, at the Cuyuni River, Essequibo, he had in his possession 16 12-gauge shotgun cartridges without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield told the court that on the day in question, ranks in the area saw Guerreiro and requested to carry out a search on his person; during the search, an officer found the 16 rounds of ammunition in a haversack which Guerreiro had on his back. The allegation was put to him and he admitted ownership of the ammunition; he was therefore arrested and later charged.

Attorney-at-Law Ravindra Mohabir who represented Guerreiro in the matter, asked that bail be granted Guerreiro, since his client has no knowledge of the ammunition.

Magistrate McLennan remanded Guerreiro to prison on the grounds that he has no fixed place of abode and adjourned the matter until December 16, 2019. The matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court.
