MAGISTRATE Faith McGusty on Friday, October 4, 2019, sentenced a 30-year-old man to serve two years’ imprisonment for breaking into a woman’s car.
Albert DeFreitas of Leopold Street appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was found guilty after being on trial.
Particulars of the charge stated that, on January 31, 2018, at Parade Street, Georgetown, he stole a handbag, cellphone, laptop, among other items totalling $550,000, the property of Shelly Haynes.
Magistrate McGusty in handing down the sentence told the court that she found sufficient evidence against DeFreitas.
DeFreitas denied the charge when he made his first appearance before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
According to information, Haynes parked her motor car along Parade Street and went into a nearby school. Upon her return, she discovered that the right side door of her vehicle was tampered with and her items were missing.
The matter was reported, an investigation was made and upon reviewing nearby Closed-Circuit Television Camera (CCTV), DeFreitas was seen breaking into Haynes’ car and removing the items.
