A 19-year-old biker, who was seen in widely circulated video on social media, was on Wednesday, October 2, 2019, arraigned before Magistrate Faith McGusty.
Anthony Clarke of “B” field Sophia appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and admitted that, on September 28, 2019, at Robb and Wellington Streets, he assaulted Police Constable Joel Samuels.
Clarke also admitted that, on the same day and at the same location, in public hearing, he behaved disorderly.
However, Clarke denied the third charge which stated that, on the same day and at the same location, he used abusive language towards Police Constable Samuels.
Clarke also denied that, on the same day and at the same location, he damaged one flash valued at $2,400, property of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The teen cried throughout the court proceeding and stated that, “All I did was ask the police for my key. Me and him start to ramp so I jump on pun the bike and he start fuh ride but the traffic was busy so we ain’t reach far.”
Clarke, who was unrepresented, admitted that he was wrong and apologized to the police constable and offered to compensate the GPF for the damaged flashlight.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted. He stated that many young men like Clarke were disrespectful to the traffic ranks of GPF and Clarke should be used as an example to show that the consequences were grave.
However, Magistrate McGusty fined Clarke $20,000 for the two offences he admitted to committing and released him on $20,000 bail for the two offences he denied committing.
