MIAMI, Florida (CMC) – Jamaica women’s national team will now look to take the next step toward qualifying for a first-ever Olympics when the 2020 CONCACAF qualifying championship opens this week.
After miraculously qualifying for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Jamaica Women will face Cuba, St Lucia, Barbados and the United States Virgin Islands on home soil at the National Stadium in Kingston in Group ‘B’ of the qualifying championship.
The Championship has attracted 13 teams from around the Caribbean and they will challenge for three spots in the final round of CONCACAF qualification for the Olympics to be stated in Tokyo, Japan.
The Caribbean qualifying stage consists of three groups to be played in round-robin format with the winner of each group advancing to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying.
Group ‘A’ will see five teams take to the field at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad, including host nation Trinidad & Tobago, Dominican Republic, St Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda and Aruba.
The Juan Ramon Loubriel Stadium in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, will see three teams aim for top spot in Group C. A little more than a year after reaching the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, a young group of Haiti players will try to edge closer to their Olympic dream, but first they must do battle with hosts Puerto Rico and also Suriname.
The games in Group A and Group B commenced on Monday and will conclude on October 8, while Group C will begin on Thursday and wrap up on October 7.
