Dear Editor,
THE Stabroek News carried a letter from Jamil Changlee that Guyana should not extract oil from our territory. Why would a newspaper publish such silly views?
We are just months away from first-oil. Guyana is likely to be the richest country in the world. We can dream about jobs, higher living standards, better education, etc. But Changlee said we must “leave de oil deh” and continue to be poor and be kicked around in this world!
Soon we will hear some others saying we should leave our gold in the ground as there are risks of pollutions of our rivers, and that we should not grow rice because weedicides and pesticides to help grow better crops will contaminate our waters.
The idea is that we should not glorify poverty. We should benefit from all of our resources, but must do so safely.
Regards,
Rovin Singh
