Prayers will save our country not oil

Dear Editor,
I BELIEVE that prayers will save our country, not oil, not wealth. Prayers are the foundation and basis of everything in our lives. Therefore, there is nothing more or less needed to save ourselves from this man-made crisis but our prayers.

The state of our country has diminished greatly, resulting in hard times for ourselves and families. With Guyana’s political state and rising oil discussions topping many lead stories both in the Caribbean and worldwide, we have become a very wanted country for entrepreneurs in this field. Guyana has recently been flooded with foreigners who have come to bargain our wealth for their satisfaction, with our country’s well-being buried at the back of their heads. Many citizens have a strong belief that this oil and money will make Guyana better; however, I am here to say that this is not what will save us, but our prayers.

Of all the religions in this magnificent country, from the well-known to the unknown, we all pray in some way or the other. When in distress pray for guidance, when something good has happened we pray out of gratitude. We make it a habit to pray, no matter our situation. The Holy Quran says in chapter 13 verse 28, “Without doubt, in the remembrance of God do hearts find satisfaction.” And similarly in the Bible, “Do not be anxious about anything, but everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6. It is seen that God says that he is there to listen to us, to satisfy our needs and requests and all that we need to do is to call on him. He is the one who will help us with our struggles and hardships. He is the one who will protect and help our families from this crisis. He is the one who can bring the dignity of our beautiful country back and guide us to prosperity.

I am no priest or pandit, but I am a citizen of this wonderful country Guyana and I am concerned for the future of this land; I think that everyone should know that neither wealth nor oil will save our families and country, but us, our prayers, thank You.
