A FIRE, believed to be electrical in origin, destroyed a Lot 12 Lancaster, East Berbice, Corentyne home on Thursday afternoon. The fire started at approximately 17:00 hrs.

According to Jerry Isaacs, the fire started in the upper flat of the two-storey house, in a bedroom on the eastern side of the concrete building, just moments after he left to go to a neighbour.

“Everybody was downstairs when the fire started and we just managed to run to safety and were unable to save anything,” he said.

Isaacs related that efforts by residents, who formed a bucket brigade to save the house, proved futile even when firefighters arrived.

Isaacs said the house was not insured and estimates the losses to be in the millions. The Guyana Fire Service has launched an investigation into the blaze.
