ON Thursday September 26, 2019, the Ministry of Social Protection remedied a twenty-year-old injustice inflicted on two government employees.

Derrick Cummings, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of telecommunications; Francis Carryl, Industrial Relations Consultant and the Assistant Chief Labour Officer, Karen Vansluytman-Corbin, addressed the press conference which was held at the Colgrain House on Camp Street.

Two senior managers, in 1998, were dismissed under questionable circumstances and, rather than seeking reparation through the courts, the employees appealed internally to His Excellency President David Granger who referred the matter to the Ministry of Telecommunications which sought the involvement of the Ministry of Social Protection.
In March 2016, a complaint was filed which was followed by an investigation that required the Ministry to conduct interviews with current and retired employees and examine historical records thoroughly. The said investigation was completed in August of 2019.
“Social Protection wishes to emphasize that no matter how long it takes, it will always ensure that injustices inflicted on any and every class of workers whether in the Private or Public Sector are reversed so that workers’ rights and dignity can be restored, and enjoyed within the parameters of ‘A Good Life’,” Mr. Carryl explained.

The Ministry of Social Protection concluded that a grave injustice had been inflicted on the two employees and therefore submitted and maintained that it should not be allowed to remain un-addressed. This course of action was also endorsed by the Attorney General Chambers.

Hence that course of action led to the compensation of the ex-employees.
Derrick Cummings also noted that the Ministry made sure no stones were left unturned, as it worked tirelessly to ensure that the employees were compensated. He added that the Ministry will continue to work hard to ensure that persons who would have suffered injustices are compensated.

Miss Corbin also endorsed that the ministry will continue to ensure that injustices inflicted on workers are corrected, no matter how long it takes.
