THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) on Monday declared its unwavering support to the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Government when councillors met for their fortnightly statutory meeting at City Hall.
“We recognise that the government is a legal government,” Georgetown Mayor Ubraj Narine said during his announcements.

The statutory meeting in full swing on Monday.

As such, he said he is encouraging citizens and those Guyanese in the diaspora to stand in support of the government. “Until elections are held; that’s the only way that the government can change. So we recognize our government as a legal one,” Narine stated.
President David Granger had made it clear to the Opposition that the APNU+AFC Government will govern the country without any limitations to its authority.
The opposition, since the controversial passage of the no-confidence motion in the National Assembly on December 21, 2018, has been attempting to strip the government of its powers and responsibilities.

Initially, it called for government to resign with immediate effect, and then said that the government should perform the duty of caretaker using the Constitution as the basis of its argument.

However, Article 106(7) of the Constitution states: “notwithstanding its defeat, the government shall remain in office and they shall hold an election within three months, or such longer period as the National Assembly shall by resolution supported by not less than two-thirds of the votes of all the elected members of the National Assembly determine, and shall resign after the President takes the oath of office following the election.”
