– ‘Green Pathway’ tree-planting programme launched
THE township of Bartica launched a massive tree-planting programme called ‘Green Pathway’ on Saturday, as part of their continued efforts towards its transformation into the model ‘green town’ of Guyana.
This initiative saw the construction of a fish pond, planting of various trees and the creation of a plant-growing wall. This facility served as a major attraction and benefitted students and pupils doing assignments in the study of Social Studies and Science.
In a press release, the Bartica Mayor and Town Council outlined that the primary focus of the programme, which is to provide a greener, more attractive local environment, is expected to set the stage for an investor-friendly environment, laying a foundation for economic opportunities in the growing tourism sector.
The programme, which is supported by the Ministry of Communities, is expected to attract tourism investments, create jobs, and provide cleaner air and cooler roadways. It will also assist in beautifying the township, creating an environment for various species of birds
which will allow for research and studies.
“The participation of stakeholders is crucial for the success of the project and in the coming weeks, public engagements and consultations will be held to ensure the success of this programme,” the release stated.
Dubbed the “green town”, Mayor Gifford Marshall stated that Bartica has been working tirelessly to maintain that status.
Only recently, the municipality had effected works to transform its Town Hall compound into a ‘green space’.
Several trees are expected to be planted within the coming months, with a particular focus in the main business hub of the township.
