ON Monday September 2, 2019, a young man was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that, on July 15, 2019, at Regent Street, Kumar Shaw stole a minibus battery valued at $20,000 from Kinn Dos Santos.
When the charge was read to Shaw, he admitted saying ” yea man me carry it way”.
Police Prosecutor noted that, on the day in question, the virtual complainant secured and parked his vehicle. On the following day, when the virtual complainant returned to his vehicle, he discovered that the battery compartment of the vehicle was open and the battery was missing.
The defendant was seen on CCTV and the matter was reported to the police.
He was arrested and later charged.
Shaw noted that he attempted to retrieve the stolen item from the person he sold it to, but the said individual refused and assaulted him causing actual bodily harm.
Shaw pleaded with the magistrate to give him community service; however he could not produce a fixed address.
Magistrate Daly gave Shaw a $15,000 fine.
The magistrate explained to the defendant, because of his inability to produce a fixed address he cannot be granted community service and will have to pay a fine or be sentenced to two months’ imprisonment.
