ON Wednesday August 21, 2019, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, a 21-year-old man, charged with break and entering and larceny, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Senior Magistrate Ann McLennan.
The charge stated that, Calvin DoSantos of Mahdia, on Saturday, August 17 and Sunday August 18, 2019, broke and entered the shop of Lee Xiu Juan and stole a collection of Digicel cards valuing $200,000 and $300,000 cash.
Police Prosecutor noted that, on the days in question, the virtual complainant secured her business and retired to bed. Upon waking, she discovered the front door to her shop was partially open. She then checked her cashier box where the phone cards and cash were previously stored and found same empty.
Upon realizing that her shop had been broken into, she then checked the CCTV camera and saw the defendant and reported the matter to the Mahdia Police Station.
The police then apprehended DoSantos, and the sum of $15,000 was retrieved.
Magistrate McLennan remanded DoSantos to prison.
