RESIDENTS of the community of Kara Kara are bubbling over with satisfaction, following major rehabilitation works that have been done to Proctor Road, the community’s main access road. The multi-million dollar road was included in the list of some 20 community roads that have been completed in Linden for 2019.
The rehabilitation of the road has given the community an enhanced look since the old access road was riddled with potholes and huge craters. Residents had often complained about its condition and for years have been calling for relief, since the community has a primary school, the Linden branch of the Cyril Potter of College Education, a hotel and a call centre. Several other communities such as Retrieve and Rainbow City can also be accessed from Kara Kara.
Transportation was a sore issue for residents since short drop cars and taxi drivers had often refused to travel there.
“It is a major relief for me because I have a problem with my knee and sometimes you ask the drivers to drop you in and even though you paying the extra $100, sometimes they refuse and I have to walk in, so I am happy that it was done,” Waveney James said. She added, “The community get a boost, the place look bright and nice with this new road, I don’t know how people can say the government not doing anything, the government working for us.”
Another resident, Denise Belgrave, said she has been living in the community since in the 1960’s and this was the first time she recalled any major work being done on the road. “I think it is a very very good initiative, the residents are overwhelmed. We need to give the RDC kudos for doing that road. It is one of the greatest things that was done for the community and it is one of the best roads done in the area,” she said.
In addition to the road works, Kara Kara also benefited from drainage works, debushing and other community enhancement projects.
Municipal Councillor for the community, Deron Adams, said that he is pleased with the development that the constituents are benefiting from, since it fits in line with the government’s vision for infrastructural development across the region. He also commended the contractor for expediting the work, since it only commenced a few weeks ago and is already completed. “The road was in a terrible state for some 25 years, and I’m happy that today the residents of Kara Kara who would have been complaining bitterly about the many challenges they would have endured over the years, can now breathe again and are comforted by the fact that the government has once again delivered,” he said.
In addition to Proctor Road, some of the other 20 roads that have been completed include South Amelia’s Ward access road, Blinking Corner Block 22 road, Christianburg Front Road, Victory Valley Access Road and Silver City road. The RDC has successfully tendered all projects for 2019. Regional Executive Officer Orrin Gordon related that the 2019 work programme is progressing according to schedule. He said that an early start was executed with the residents in mind, since they are the ones to benefit from the monies. The aim was for all monies to be used and none to return to the consolidated fund at the end of the budget cycle.
