I wish to refer to a letter published in the media written by a Rayvonne P Bourne titled “ the Mayor should retract statement, and apologize to Chief Constable’’.
The matter relates to a bag containing cash found after several weeks in the vehicle assigned to the Chief Constable.

One could not help being impressed by the details contained in the letter.
As citizens we are all taken back- for a bag with M&CC money to be left in a vehicle for weeks, not a few hours or days but weeks is itself outrageous and worrisome.
Concerned, I discussed the matter with the Chief Constable and the Mayor- the Town Clerk was at a conference and was not available.

It’s not for me to comment on this incident, however, I learnt that this strongly worded letter placed before the public was written by a member of the City Constabulary- amazing but true.

How could a Constable be so bold and have the audacity to have published such an admonition of the Mayor. I have been assured that this misconceived adventure by a Constable will be examined by the administration.

Suffice to note, first that we must uphold and cherish the right to speak out against wrong doings. These rights exercised in a variety of ways have shaped the world we live in today. However, these rights and opportunities need to be supported on a foundation of good order- rules accepted by society. In other words, a consensus of what is acceptable to secure the harmony within the nation’s state, if there is not to be bedlam or confusion.
These key elements have not always been applied and understood, hence an imperfect world.

Last week in a conversation with a group of young persons, they felt that politics was that nasty word. Happily they were good listeners as we exchanged views; I at all times respecting their views happily, agreed that there must be rules and agreed relationships, of every strata of society- in the home or family, the school, the mosque, the church, the temple, the sports club, the cricket field etc. This allowed me to remind them that happy revolution by mostly young people constitute the most dramatic and energetic developments in recent world history.

During the recent few centuries, we have witnessed swift and powerful change in the socioeconomic life of nation. In every instance, the changes were led by men and women who were disciplined and guided by an ideology of promises. These all have a bearing on our history, successful ideological revolution. I believe that I convinced them that the great universal changes, whether it be Mohamed, Jesus or Bahaullah- were all revolutionaries or politicians in its purest and uncorrupted form.

Now the M&CC Constabulary just a few days ago celebrated its anniversary- the oldest disciplinary organization in our country. As such, we must preserve the character and utility of functional authority and not open the flood gates to lawlessness and worst ‘iconoclast’.
When a Constable, without going through his superiors, the union and Council, can upbraid the Mayor publicly- I believe we are in troubled water.
I expect this young man to retract this gumption on his part.
