Siblings facing multiple charges

A CASE in which Sherwin Hamilton and his sister Patrina De Groot are facing multiple charges continued before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.

Sherwin Hamilton, age 45, of Lot 20 Sarah Johanna, East Bank Demerara, is charged with assault causing actual bodily harm committed against Candace Edwards at Old Road, Land of Canaan, East bank Demerara; disorderly behaviour and using threatening language at the Timehri Police Station on March 7, 2019. Hamilton’s sister Patrina De Groot is charged with disorderly behaviour at the Timehri Police Station on March 7, 2019.

At Wednesday’s hearing, Sergeant Jullian Griffith testified about the events that occurred on March 7, 2019, the day that Hamilton was arrested and charged for the offences.

Hamilton was asked by Magistrate Latchman if he had questions pertaining to Sergeant Griffith’s testimony. In reply, Hamilton denied using expletives at the Timehri Police Station on the day of his arrest and detention there. He then opted to take the witness stand to relate his version of the incident which occurred on March 7. Hamilton told the court that “he did talk hard and asked the police what he was being locked up for.”

Under cross-examination by Police Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, Hamilton maintained his denial that he had cursed or used such words to the police at the Timehri Police Station.

The hearing for the charge of disorderly behaviour at the Timehri Police Station will continue on Thursday, July 18, at 14: 00 hrs. or 2 p.m.
