Kitty man sentenced to three years for drug trafficking

MAGISTRATE Dylon Bess, on Friday, July 12, 2019, sentenced a 45-year-old man to serve three years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of $2M, after he was convicted for trafficking over 10 pounds of cannabis.

Paul Smith of Thomas Street, Kitty, was on trial at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where the matter was prosecuted by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Vishnu Hunte.

On Friday, Smith was found guilty of having 4.934 kilograms of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on May 18, 2018, at his Kitty home.

Magistrate Bess, after considering the elements of the case and the amount of cannabis involved, sentenced Smith to three years’ imprisonment along with a fine of $2M.
According to reports, ranks from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Anti-Narcotics Unit, acting on information received, went to Smith’s two-storey Thomas Street, Kitty house and conducted a search. The narcotics was found in the lower flat of his home in two salt bags.
